 Biocatalysis Research

In the Ball State Laboratory for Biocatalysis Research, we aim to address the chemical industry's dependence on petroleum-based solvents and toxic heavy metal catalysts by developing new enzymatic catalysts with novel and synthetically useful reactivity.

Rieske dioxygenases

Rieske dioxygenases (ROs) are a class of enzymes found in soil bacteria known for the first step in the degradation of aromatic pollutants to the corresponding cis-dihydrodiol. Here, we aim to develop ROs variants through saturated mutagenesis and directed evolution to expand the substrate scope of this class of enzymes and alter its reactivity.
